Alumasc’s BluRoof system reduces and controls the peak rate of stormwater discharge from roof areas. Detention of storm water up to a prescribed maximum hydraulic head occurs, with subsequent discharge controlled over an elongated time period.

The BluRoof drainage strategies were introduced at design stage to help meet SuDS requirements and Alumasc worked extensively with Capita to achieve the required reduction in rainwater run-off.

The installation was carried out by Alumasc registered approved contractor Cambridge Flat Roofing acting as sub-contractor to Bouygues UK.

This project utilised 1,500m2 of Hydrotech Hot Melt Waterproofing and Blackdown Green Roof NatureMat. NatureMat is a vegetated mat consisting of a biodegradable base layer, a specially formulated substrate layer and a 90% mature plant cover comprising of 6 core species (predominantly Sedums) along with 13 randomly sown species. All grown to maturity in Blackdowns’s own fields in Somerset.

A roofing system was needed that would provide students with an environmentally beneficial solution that would help improve their lives. NatureMat provides that solution by helping clean the air from surrounding pollution and contributing to the required acoustic and thermal properties needed for this project.

Another benefit of this system is that the location in Glamorgan receives high levels of rainfall, therefore a system was needed that could absorb high levels of rainwater and deal with it effectively – Blackdown NatureMat is highly efficient in absorbing rainwater and along with Hydrotech Hot Melt Waterproofing having Zero Product Failures in over 50 years this system will provide the sports hall with a long, reliable and efficient Flat Roof solution for the long term.

Monoscreed is a fast curing PMMA based compound screed (solvent and isocyanate free) comprising of resin + filler + aggregate mix. The cold applied compound can be mixed at roof level and applied to concrete decks (3mm – 50mm) to bring deck levels back to tolerance i.e. zero falls’ thus reducing deck deflection/back-falls.

monoscreed self levveling screed

FAST CURE TIME

The system is unaffected by ambient temperatures, is rainproof within 15 minutes of being applied and will fully cure in circa 45 minutes, thus offering significant programme benefits when compared with more

APPLICATION TO SUBSTRATE

Monoscreed can be applied directly to suitably prepared cementitious concrete which is free from dust, dampness, laitance, grease, oil or other contamination, and if necessary primed with Alumasc Bitumen Primer. The system comes in pre-measured packs of components palletised to ensure easy transportation to roof level and accuracy of the compound mix.

OVERLAYING

Monoscreed is also suitable to be installed over Hydrotech 6125, Derbigum bituminous membranes & Caltech QC cold-applied liquid where necessary.

The prestigious new home for the School of Law and a new social hub is a key element in the major investment of £350m in world-class facilities for staff and students planned over the next decade at Queen’s University, Belfast. This facility provides several innovative teaching spaces central to which will be the Moot Court Room interactive teaching space.

Flat Roof Systems installed at Queens University Belfast

Todd Architects specified a warm roof system of Torchtite Vapour Barrier, Alumasc Tapered Insulation and Mastergold Underlay topped with a Mastergold Mineral Cap Sheet – a full Euroroof warm roof system.

This roofing system utilised a tapered insulation scheme to help achieve sufficient falls to help provide a longer roof life for the building’s roof areas. With the existing deck being completely flat sufficient falls needed to be achieved to avoid any standing/ponding water which can form algae and moss over the years and shorten the membrane’s performance and life span.

The tapered insulation provided sufficient falls for the roof and met the required U-Values to help towards the building’s overall thermal performance.

All roofing work(s) were expertly carried out by Alumasc Registered Contractors Crown Roofing and within schedule.

Tucked away in the rolling hillsides of Monmouthshire is The Decoy Bunker. The original bunker was built in 1941 and was designed as a special decoy target for German bombers. The secluded bunker has now been fully restored using Alumasc’s Derbigum Waterproofing and Blackdown’s Green Roof Systems and is now a unique holiday home.

green roof system alumasc roofing systems

As part of the design the bunker needed to blend directly into the hillside therefore a highly durable waterproofing system that could provide full protection from the water travelling down from the surrounding landscape was needed. A green roof waterproofing solution that would provide the maximum blending effect was also required to give it the desired ‘camouflage’ effect by using the existing soil and grass from the surrounding landscape. Blackdown Greenroof Drainage Layers, Intensive Substrate and Washed Pebble Ballast was installed to finish the green roof.

With Derbigum being a system that holds 40 year durability certification with the BBA (British Board of Agrément) – a Derbigum Black Anti-Root Built-Up System was the ideal solution. The Derbigum system sits below the green roof and provides a highly reliable waterproofing solution and maximum peace of mind for the future. Alumasc’s Registered Contractors Span Roofing carried out the installation with great results.

The newly opened Pets at Home store at Hedge End Retail Park, Southampton, provides a striking feature with its clearly visible barrel vaulted green roof installed by Blackdown. As well as softening the visual impact of the building, the green roof helped to satisfy stipulations by BREEAM enhancing the ecological aspects lost through the construction process.

green roof mat

The impressive 450sqm metre Kalzip, barrel vaulted, standing seam roof was covered with Blackdown Nature Mat – a vegetated mat made up of 6 core and 13 randomly sown sedum species – over a system comprising 50mm settled depth of specially formulated growing medium and a 25mm deep drainage layer.

green roof extensive garden roof

Because the roof has a maximum pitch of 23 degrees, customised thrust retention battens were installed to the seam clips at intervals across the roof in order to stabilise the system.

Further enhancing the biodiversity within the development, a small 10sqm Blackdown extensive wildflower green roof system was installed on a bike storage facility close to the main building. As the installation was carried out late spring/early summer, Blackdown provided a tailored temporary irrigation system to ensure the establishment of the plants into the system.

Blackdown was in contract with T A Colbourne Projects Ltd and commenting on the collaboration Contracts Manager Tim Bench said: “Blackdown submitted a competitive and compliant bid on which we were happy to place an order. The installation went according to a tight programme with Blackdown working very well with our roof installation team and completing the works in good time enabling us to strike the scaffolding and start on the wall cladding. The temporary irrigation worked very well during what was an extended, very warm and dry period. We would be very pleased to work with Blackdown again”

Pear Tree Infant School required a full flat roof refurbishment following an initial survey that showed that the existing system had come to the end of its serviceable life.

LIQUID ROOFING SYSTEM, alumasc rliquid roofing, uv resistant roofing system, flame free resistant liquid roofing systemThe existing roof finish was stripped back from the metal deck and a new warm roof system installed. The key objectives with this refurbishment was to achieve an average u-value of 0.18 W/m2K thus improving the thermal efficiency of the building.

Alumasc installed a new Caltech UV Cold Applied Liquid Warm Roof System with a tapered insulation scheme to improve the drainage efficiency and prevent future standing/ponding water areas.

The whole installation was carried out using ‘flame free’ products and methods.

To help further improve management of rainwater Roof-Pro ProDrain Outlets were installed – this guaranteed the correct detailing from the roof to the outlets. The existing lightning conductor system was also upgraded to the Roof-Pro Lightning Conductor Clip System.

LIQUID ROOFING SYSTEM, alumasc rliquid roofing, uv resistant roofing system, flame free resistant liquid roofing system

Finally, a defined Caltech Walkway System was added to provide a more durable surface for traffic and again help to maximise the life of the roof.

Caltech UV has an extended life cycle due to its enhanced UV resistance and is highly adapted to cope well when exposed to sunlight thus avoiding UV Degradation. Caltech UV cures to form a seamless, durable and weather-resistant waterproofing solution.
