Alumasc’s Euroroof Mono flat roof membrane has been used for an urgent roof replacement at Whitstone School in Shepton Mallet.

The Euroroof system offered the speed and ease of installation required to ensure the roof could be replaced quickly and efficiently during the middle of term, with minimum disruption to students and staff. The project also showcased Alumasc’s ability to work with the school academy structure, providing cost-effective, fast-track solutions to their roofing needs.

The school educates around 600 students aged 11-16 and gained Academy status in 2011. In order for government academy funding to be secured for the renovations, it was imperative that works were carried out to strict timescales between January and March 2013.

Alumasc were appointed by Property and Construction Consultants, Ridge & Partners LLP, to carry out a full conditions survey, providing full reports for each of the 16 roof areas in need of work.

Greg Bourne of Alumasc explains: “Alumasc has extensive experience of working with building surveyors and school business managers to meet the needs of the academy funding process. We provided a full survey and detailed specification for Whitstone, complete with approved contractor costings for each individual roof area, which enabled the Academy Business Management Team to prioritise the works and apply for funding based on accurate costs.”

2,800m² of the Euroroof Mono single layer system was installed by Alumasc Registered Contractor, MITIE Tilley Roofing, over the existing two-layer roof, saving significant time and cost. Alumasc also supplied

rooflights, a handrail system and an impressive large barrel rooflight. Matthew Goddard, Commercial Manager for MITIE Tilley Roofing explained, “We were very impressed with the speed of service and technical support offered by Alumasc, which enabled us to finish this complicated project on time and within budget for a very important client.”

The Blackdown Green Roofing offer combines the design, supply, installation and maintenance of roof planting systems along with Blackdown’s horticultural expertise.  Tailored Green Roof solutions are available that:

1) Suit the project’s climate and micro-climate.

2) Deliver the objectives sought from the green roof.

What makes Blackdown Green Roofs Different?

Blackdown Green Roofs were born out of a true passion for plants. With expertise in horticulture and plant development, there has been continual research into important areas such as plant density, species co-habitation, flowering times, substrate types/depths, water consumption etc.  This has established a diverse range of green roof configurations.

With a range of suitable hardy succulents, native and non-native plants commonly in cultivation, and the ability to contract grow additional species, advice is available on the most appropriate planting strategy for the project – tailoring the green roof to suit the brief, not compromising the brief to suit a limited range of green roof plant options.

Experienced Contracts teams oversee each project, delivering a high quality installation in compliance with the project programme and on budget through identification of the optimum installation method.

Tailored maintenance programmes are compiled to ensure the long-term success of green roof installations – showing the same care for our plants on the roof as we do during cultivation.

BluRoof LogoIntroducing BluRoof: A Sustainable Engineered Drainage System from Alumasc.

BluRoof is a new ‘systems approach’ to Blue Roofs – an increasingly prominent sustainable drainage technique that switches the focus of rainwater management from instantaneous runoff of high intensity storm events to controlled, attenuated runoff.

Bluroof Drainage 3d

Simon Poë, Technical Director for Alumasc Roofing Systems, explains the need for these advances in rainwater drainage.

The recent increased frequency and severity of flooding in the UK has served to highlight the need to complement conventional drainage systems with a range of sustainable measures that can provide additional drainage capacity.

Blue Roofs are a relatively inexpensive option as, unlike most other SUDS tools, they occupy otherwise-redundant roof space without extending beyond the building’s footprint.

A Blue Roof is designed to alleviate flood risk by reducing and controlling the peak rate of discharge in compliance with design requirements; facilitating the detention of stormwater, up to a prescribed maximum hydraulic head, for subsequent discharge over an elongated period of time.

Alumasc’s BluRoof system combines the new Harmer BluRoof outlet with a high performance BluRoof waterproofing membrane.

How does the Harmer BluRoof Outlet work?

The Harmer BluRoof outlet restricts the maximum

harmerSYSTEM

permissible discharge of stormwater from the roof. As a result, during more intense storm events, rainfall will exceed the rate of discharge, leading stormwater to temporarily back-up on the roof until such time as the Harmer BluRoof outlet has the capacity to discharge it.

Waterproofing

Clearly, the temporary storage of water at roof level requires the highest confidence in the waterproofing solution. Alumasc Roofing Systems has developed its BluRoof solutions based upon tried and trusted systems, with yet further enhanced specifications and service levels. For insulated roof areas, the dual-reinforced BluRoof Built-Up High Performance Membrane is specified as a fully-bonded system, with extended and high pressure-rolled laps for excellent watertight integrity. With a proven track record of over 40 years, the system offers a mineral-free surface which reduces the risk of blockages, whilst a root-resistant version is also available, for compatibility with Blackdown Green Roof systems, available from Alumasc.

For buried (non-insulated) systems, such as podium applications, Alumasc’s BluRoof Monolithic Membrane provides a self-healing waterproofing solution that is free from laps and with a proven track record of over 50 years.

BluRoof Response

A Blue Roof can contribute to the attenuation of the kind of storm event that can induce localised flooding. For example, in response to a 6 hour storm event with a return period of 1 in 100 years, when rainfall depth is 109 mm, and a peak intensity of 5.01 l/s falls on a 284 m2 roof, the peak rate of runoff is 0.285 l/s. This represents a peak reduction of 94%. In this case, the maximum stage of water reaches 90 mm, before draining slowly over a period of 27 hours.

The engineered drainage approach adopted within Alumasc’s holistic BluRoof solutions, which includes enhanced service levels for specification and site support and leak detection testing, enables Alumasc to offer a single point warranty that covers the waterproofing and drainage as part of its “BluRoof Promise”.

providence wharf london hydrotech waterproofing

New Providence Wharf, London

The last 20 years has seen a significant rise in the popularity of hard and soft landscaped podiums, roofs, terraces and balconies integrated into residential and mixed-use developments alike.

The challenge for both designer and developer is how to protect your building successfully when you are burying the all-important waterproofing.

Hot Melt Rubberised Bitumen Membranes have established a firm hold in this market over the last 25 years, but are all systems truly “equal and approved”?

Trevor Lang, Technical Manager of Alumasc Waterproofing, explains how to evaluate hot melt systems, and how to ensure the best performance from this robust waterproofing solution.

Alumasc’s Euroroof Mastergold flat roof membrane and extensive green roof system have been installed at St Michael’s Church School in Peterborough on a highly challenging roof design.

Alumasc worked closely with its registered installer M&J Flat Roofing to achieve an outstanding result at the new school, which is architecturally unique with a complex roof geometry supporting a green roof construction. The roof was mono-pitched to most areas but also had a severe slope and pitches at three different angles.

StMichealsAlumasc were involved from the initial design stages following a recommendation by M&J Flat Roofing to the architect, Peter Smith Associates of Peterborough.  All companies worked together for a solution which resulted in 1200 sq m of a Euroroof Mastergold Anti-root warm roof system being installed with an Alumasc Sedum Extensive green roof.

Peter Henrickson of M&J Flat Roofing commented: “Following unforeseen problems, the original main contractor was no longer working on the project and things had fallen behind. M&J stepped in and worked with Alumasc  to offer an overall roofing package that allowed the client to re-commence the works, despite having not yet appointed a new main contractor.

“The building is multi-faceted with roof pitches from 5-35 degrees.  Retention of the landscaping and long term irrigation would be vital to the success of the project.  We knew that Alumasc’s technical expertise alongside M&J’s practical installation experience would result in success following our previous collaboration at Falmouth University on one of the earliest UK near vertical green roof installations.

“At St Michael’s there were numerous tricky interfaces, including PV panels, service risers and cable arrest details.  Designing a system that could not only be installed around these features, but that would also perform and allow for future maintenance, was a challenge that Alumasc and M&J met head-on together.”

Euroroof Mastergold transforms working with traditional bituminous membranes, speeding up installation time without compromising long-term performance. Euroroof Mastergold is a fully warranted system that offers high tensile strength and pliability and excellent resistance to puncture and UV degradation. The Mastergold membrane is available with a black mineral finish and can be used with a range of insulations to suit specification and U-value parameters.

Alumasc has provided a complete roofing package for the first major new development in Wapping for over 10 years.  Developed by Ballymore, Wapping Lane is an iconic creation, comprising residential, leisure, retail and recreation facilities over five high-rise blocks with a central plaza sitting above an underground car park.

Wapping_PrPicDue to the complexity of its design, a range of roofing solutions was required to accommodate varying roof details on the five blocks, balconies, terraces and podium roof area over the car park.

Fenland Flat Roofing installed Alumasc’s inverted Hydrotech waterproofing system with a biodiverse green roof to levels 4,5,6 and 7 on blocks C and D, with additional biodiverse green roofing and Alumasc’s extensive and intensive green roof systems, installed to the main roof areas. All the perimeters had a paving finish. The podium area comprised hard and soft landscaping consisting of an intensive green roof with additional planter areas.

Many of the balconies were particularly difficult to waterproof due to the fact that they were very narrow, and a number of pitch pocket details were installed around balustrade posts. Fenland Flat Roofing were able to meet the challenge due to the versatility the Hydrotech system offered.

The Hydrotech hot melt system is perfectly suited for zero falls applications and provides seamless waterproofing ideal for high performance green roofs, podiums and highly detailed waterproofing or water feature schemes. It is manufactured using 10% post-consumer recycled material, is BBA accredited and has European Technical Approval ETA-05/0152.  Hydrotech is designed to last for lifetime of the structure and is available with a choice of warranties.

Alumasc’s extensive and biodiverse roofs are lightweight with a relatively shallow substrate and provide a range of planting options.  Alumasc’s intensive green roofs  support a wide range of plants, trees and shrubs, providing recreational space for people and a rich habitat for wildlife.
