Sainsbury Lab Wins Architecture’s Top Prize

A building featuring Alumasc’s Hydrotech MM6125 Structural  Waterproofing system, has won architecture’s top award.

The £82m Sainsbury Laboratory was awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize, beating the Lyric Theatre in Belfast (also featuring Hydrotech), the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield and the Olympic Stadium to the prestigious prize.

The Sainsbury Laboratory is located in Cambridge’s Botanic Garden and was designed by architects Stanton Williams. In addition to the prestigious Stirling Prize, the design has also won other awards, including the 2011 World Learning Building Of The Year WAF Award and the 2011 Concrete Society Award. It has also achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” rating for its outstanding environmental performance.

Hydrotech was chosen due to the complex nature of the roof, which features photovoltaic panels, roof lights, exposed roof edge details and sunken wells housing mechanical and electrical services. Alumasc’s Approved Contractor, Fenland Flat Roofing, installed 6,000m2 of Hydrotech MM6125 structural waterproofing and overcame numerous challenges presented by the roof’s unusual design.
